What is ghassoul clay?

Ghassoul, also spelled rhassoul, comes from the Arabic word ghassala, meaning "to wash". It is a volcanic clay of the type Moroccan Lava Clay that is found exclusively in the Moulouya Valley in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains.

Ghassoul is not chemically processed. The clay is mined, dried in the sun and ground into powder. Exactly as it has been done for centuries. The result is a mineral-rich clay with a high content of silicon, magnesium, iron, calcium, sodium and potassium.

What is special about ghassoul is the way it cleanses. Most clays work through absorption: they soak up sebum and dirt like a sponge. Ghassoul works primarily through adsorption. Impurities attach themselves to the surface of the clay particles and are lifted off the skin that way. This process is effective but far gentler than the absorption of green clay or bentonite, leaving your skin clean but not dried out.

Ghassoul for your hair

Ghassoul is the only clay mask in our range that can also be used as a hair mask. In the traditional hammam it is used as an alternative to shampoo: it cleanses the scalp gently, removes built-up product residue and gives the hair volume and shine, without sulphates or silicones.

How to use ghassoul for your hair:

1. Mix 2 tablespoons of clay powder with lukewarm water into a yoghurt-thick paste.
2. Apply to your wet scalp and massage in gently.
3. Spread the rest over the lengths of your hair.
4. Leave in for 5 to 10 minutes.
5. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
6. Follow with a conditioner bar if you like, for extra softness.

💡 Tip: Ghassoul as a hair mask is especially nice when your hair needs a "reset", for example when you are switching from bottled shampoo to shampoo bars and your hair feels stiff or heavy from built-up silicones.

Directions for use (face)

1. Mix a teaspoon of clay powder with a little water or rose water into a smooth, spreadable paste.
2. Apply a thin, even layer to your face. Avoid the eyes and lips.
3. Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not let the mask dry out completely.
4. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your face dry.
5. Apply your usual day or night cream afterwards.

💡 Tip: Use a wooden or plastic spoon, metal can react with the minerals in the clay.

💡 Tip: Use a dark towel to wipe off the mask. Ghassoul leaves a brown tint that is hard to wash out of white towels.
