Bentonite Clay Mask: The Deepest Cleanse
Bentonite clay is the most powerful deep cleanser in our clay range. What makes this clay unique is a property that no other type of clay has: bentonite swells on contact with water. The clay expands to many times its original volume and therefore penetrates deeper into the pores than other clays. The result is an intensive, deep cleanse that draws impurities, excess sebum and built-up dirt out of the pores.
For €7,95 you get a tin with 90 grams of clay powder, enough for several masks.
What is bentonite clay?
Bentonite clay is a volcanic clay formed from weathered volcanic ash. The name refers to Fort Benton in Montana (USA), where it was first mined commercially. The mineral, Bentonite Clay, belongs to the smectite group and is known for one remarkable property: it absorbs water and swells to 12 to 15 times its own volume.
That swelling property is the reason bentonite cleanses so effectively. As the clay swells, impurities and sebum build-up are, as it were, "lifted" out of the pores and brought to the skin's surface. This goes deeper than other clays, which only absorb at the surface.
At the same time, that swelling property gives bentonite a firmer, lumpier texture than kaolin or red clay, for example. That is normal, it just calls for a different mixing technique (see below).
What does bentonite clay do for your skin?
🟫 Deep pore cleansing This is the core benefit of bentonite. Where green clay absorbs excess sebum at the surface, bentonite penetrates deeper into the pores thanks to its swelling property. It draws built-up dirt, dead skin cells and sebum plugs to the surface. Customers confirm the result: "clean and lovely soft skin" and "my skin is smooth and glowing after use".
🟫 High absorbency Of all the clays in our range, bentonite has the highest absorbency. It soaks up excess sebum like a sponge, so your skin feels less shiny and oily straight after the mask.
🟫 Helps with stubborn impurities One reviewer notes that "a small fatty bump seems to be getting smaller after use". Bentonite is indeed the clay best suited to stubborn, deeper-seated impurities that do not disappear with milder clays.
🟫 Refines skin texture By cleansing the pores from within and removing the top layer of dead skin cells, the skin feels smoother and softer after a bentonite mask. With regular use (no more than once a week) the skin texture becomes noticeably finer.
Important: bentonite clay is powerful
Like green clay, bentonite is a strong type of clay. Use it with care.
⚠️ No more than once a week. Bentonite is intensive. Using it more often can irritate the skin and actually increase sebum production.
⚠️ Not suitable for sensitive or dry skin. The strong absorption can dry out dry skin even further. In that case, choose our White Kaolin.
⚠️ Do not let the mask dry out completely. Rinse off as soon as it starts to tighten, after 10 to 15 minutes, or sooner if it feels tight. A fully hardened mask can cause irritation and redness.
⚠️ Test first. Apply a small amount of mixed clay to the inside of your wrist. Wait 15 minutes. No reaction? Then you can safely use it on your face.
The lump question: how do you mix bentonite properly?
Two frequently asked questions from reviews: "it goes lumpy" and "hard to spread". This is normal, bentonite goes lumpier than other clays precisely because it absorbs water so strongly. Here is the solution:
- Start with the clay, not the water. First put a teaspoon of clay powder in a small bowl.
- Add water drop by drop. Not all at once. Stir after every few drops. Bentonite needs time to take up the water.
- Use lukewarm water. Warm water is absorbed faster than cold water, which reduces lumps.
- Let the mixture stand for 1-2 minutes after stirring. Bentonite swells and becomes smoother by itself when it can rest for a moment.
- Use a wooden or plastic spoon. Metal can react with the minerals in the clay.
💡 Pro tip: Mix bentonite with apple cider vinegar instead of water. The vinegar has a low pH that activates the clay better and gives a smoother paste. Use a ratio of 1:1 (clay:vinegar).
Who is this clay mask for?
Bentonite clay is the ideal choice for:
- Oily skin with excessive sebum production
- Skin with stubborn impurities that do not disappear with milder clays
- Clogged pores and blackheads that need a deeper cleanse
- Anyone who already has experience with clay masks and is looking for a more intensive option
Not the right choice for: Sensitive or dry skin, choose White Kaolin. Normal skin looking for a milder cleanse, choose Green Clay or Red Clay.
Bentonite vs Green Clay: what is the difference?
Both are powerful cleansers for oily and blemish-prone skin. But they work differently:
🟫 Bentonite > Swells and penetrates deeper into the pores. Highest absorbency. For stubborn, deeper-seated impurities. Lumpier in texture, needs more careful mixing.
🟢 Green Clay > Absorbs sebum at the skin's surface. Tackles superficial impurities and blackheads. Smoother in texture, easier to apply.
💡 Rule of thumb: Start with green clay. If your skin responds well but you notice the impurities do not fully disappear, switch to bentonite for a deeper cleanse.
How to use
- Mix a teaspoon of clay powder drop by drop with lukewarm water (or apple cider vinegar) into a smooth paste. See the mixing tips above.
- Apply a thin, even layer to your face. Avoid the eyes and lips.
- Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off before it dries out completely.
- Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
- Apply a moisturising day or night cream afterwards. Your skin now absorbs the care better.
💡 Tip: Lightly exfoliate your skin before the mask. One reviewer confirms this boosts the effect.
