Green Clay Face Mask: The Most Powerful Cleanse for Blemish-Prone Skin

Green clay is the strongest type of clay in our range. Where white kaolin soothes and red clay stimulates circulation, green clay does one thing exceptionally well: absorbing excess sebum and drawing impurities out of the skin. This is the clay for anyone struggling with oily, shiny skin, clogged pores or recurring blemishes.

For €7,95 you get a tin of clay powder that makes several masks.

What is green clay?

Green clay, also known as French Green Clay or Montmorillonite, is a mineral-rich clay that owes its green colour to a combination of iron oxide and decomposed plant matter. It has been used in French skincare for centuries and is known for its exceptionally strong absorbing power.

The mineral in this product, Montmorillonite, has a unique crystal structure that works like a sponge. It draws oil, dirt and impurities towards it and holds on to them. That absorbing power is many times stronger than that of white kaolin or red clay. It is what makes green clay so effective, but it also means you need to use it more carefully.

What does green clay do for your skin?

🟢 Absorbs excess sebum This is the core benefit of green clay. The clay draws excess sebum (skin oil) out of the pores like a magnet. After the mask your skin immediately feels less shiny and oily. With regular use (no more than once a week) it can help regulate sebum production, so your skin feels matte and fresh for longer.

🟢 Tackles impurities Clogged pores, blackheads and small blemishes form when sebum, dead skin cells and dirt build up in the pores. Green clay draws this build-up to the surface of the skin, freeing up the pores. After rinsing, the skin is noticeably cleaner and smoother.

🟢 Refines the pores By cleansing the pores and regulating sebum production, pores look more refined over time. The skin's texture becomes smoother and more even.

🟢 Brings the skin into balance Oily and combination skin often has zones that produce too much sebum (T-zone: forehead, nose, chin) and zones that are drier (cheeks). Green clay helps regulate sebum production without drying out the drier zones further, provided you do not leave the mask on for too long.

Important: green clay is powerful

Green clay is the strongest type of clay in our range. That means you need to treat it with respect:

⚠️ No more than once a week. Using it more often can irritate your skin and actually increase sebum production (your skin then compensates by producing more sebum).

⚠️ Do not let the mask dry out completely. This is the most important rule with green clay. If the mask hardens completely on your face, it draws too much moisture out of your skin and can cause irritation, redness and a burning sensation. Rinse the mask off as soon as it starts to dry, after 10 to 15 minutes, or sooner if you feel it tightening.

⚠️ Not suitable for sensitive or dry skin. If your skin reacts quickly to active products, green clay is too strong. In that case choose our White Kaolin , the mildest clay in our range.

⚠️ Test first. Apply a small amount of mixed clay to the inside of your wrist. Wait 15 minutes. No reaction? Then you can safely use it on your face.

Who is this clay mask for?

Green clay is the ideal choice for:

  • Oily skin that gets shiny quickly and produces excess sebum
  • Blemish-prone skin with clogged pores, blackheads or small spots
  • Combination skin with an oily T-zone
  • Anyone who wants a weekly deep cleanse to complement their daily routine

Not the right choice for: Sensitive skin that reacts quickly, choose White Kaolin. Mature skin looking for glow and vitality, choose Red Clay.

Green Clay vs Bentonite: what is the difference?

Both are powerful cleansers for oily and blemish-prone skin. But they work differently:

🟢 Green Clay (this product): Absorbs sebum at the surface of the skin. Tackles surface impurities and blackheads. Smoother in texture, easier to apply.

🟫 Bentonite: Swells on contact with water and penetrates deeper into the pores. Highest absorption capacity. For stubborn, deeper-seated impurities. Lumpier in texture, needs more careful mixing.

💡 Rule of thumb: Start with green clay. If your skin responds well but you notice the impurities do not disappear completely, switch to bentonite for a deeper cleanse.

How to use

  1. Mix a teaspoon of clay powder with a little water or hydrosol until you have a smooth, spreadable paste.
  2. Apply a thin, even layer to your face. Avoid the eyes and lips. If you have combination skin, you can apply the mask to the T-zone only.
  3. Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off before it dries completely. As soon as you feel it pulling or tightening, it is time to rinse. This prevents irritation.
  4. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
  5. Then apply a moisturising day or night cream. Your skin now absorbs the care better.

💡 Tip: Use a wooden or plastic spoon to mix the clay, as metal can react with the minerals in the clay.

💡 Tip: Lightly spritz your face with water halfway through if the mask dries too quickly. This prevents irritation.

💡 Tip for combination skin: Apply green clay only to the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and use White Kaolin on the cheeks. That way you treat each zone with the right clay.

Frequently asked questions about this product

In what order do I use my facial care products?

Work from thin to thick: cleanse first, then a mask if you like, followed by serum and finally a cream or oil. During the day, finish with sun protection.

How do I use a face serum?

Apply a few drops to a clean, slightly damp face and gently press it into the skin. A serum is concentrated, so you need very little. Finish with a cream.

How do I use a clay mask?

Mix the powder with a little water into a smooth paste and apply it to a clean face. Let it dry, but not rock hard, about ten minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and then apply serum or cream.

How often do I use a face mask?

Once a week is fine for most skin types. For oily or blemish-prone skin it can be twice, for dry or sensitive skin once every two weeks.
