Productomschrijving

Bentonite Clay Mask – The Deepest Cleanse

Bentonite clay is the most powerful deep cleanser in our clay range. What makes this clay unique is a property that no other clay type has: bentonite swells upon contact with water. The clay expands to many times its original volume, allowing it to penetrate deeper into the pores than other types of clay. The result is an intensive, deep cleanse that pulls impurities, excess sebum, and accumulated dirt out of the pores.

For €7.95, you receive a tin containing 90 grams of clay powder, enough for multiple masks.

What is bentonite clay?

Bentonite clay is a volcanic clay formed from weathered volcanic ash. The name refers to Fort Benton in Montana (USA), where it was first mined commercially. The mineral, Bentonite Clay, belongs to the smectite group and is known for one special property: it absorbs water, swelling to 12 to 15 times its own volume.

This swelling property is why bentonite is so effective at cleansing. As the clay swells, impurities and sebum build-ups are essentially "lifted" out of the pores and brought to the skin's surface. This reaches deeper than other types of clay that only absorb at the surface.

At the same time, this swelling property gives bentonite a firmer, clumpier texture than, for example, kaolin or red clay. This is normal; it just requires a different mixing technique (see below).

What does bentonite clay do for your skin?

🟫 Deep pore cleansing This is the core benefit of bentonite. While green clay absorbs excess sebum at the surface, bentonite penetrates deeper into the pores thanks to its swelling property. It draws accumulated dirt, dead skin cells, and sebum plugs to the surface. Customers confirm the result: "clean and nicely soft skin" and "my skin is smooth and glowing after use".

🟫 High absorption capacity Of all the clay types in our range, bentonite has the highest absorption capacity. It mops up excess sebum like a sponge, leaving your skin feeling less shiny and oily immediately after the mask.

🟫 Helps with stubborn impurities One reviewer notes that "a fat bump seems to become smaller after use". Bentonite is indeed the clay most suitable for stubborn, deeper-seated impurities that do not disappear with milder clay types.

🟫 Refines skin texture By cleaning the pores from the inside out and removing the top layer of dead skin cells, the skin feels smoother and softer after a bentonite mask. With regular use (maximum 1x per week), skin texture becomes noticeably finer.

Important: bentonite clay is powerful

Like green clay, bentonite is a strong type of clay. Use it with care.

⚠️ Maximum 1x per week. Bentonite is intensive. Using it more often can irritate the skin and actually increase sebum production.

⚠️ Not suitable for sensitive or dry skin. Its strong absorption can further dry out dry skin. In that case, choose our White Kaolin.

⚠️ Do not let the mask dry completely. Rinse it off as soon as it starts to tighten, after 10 to 15 minutes, or sooner if it feels tight. A fully hardened mask can cause irritation and redness.

⚠️ Test first. Apply a small amount of prepared clay to the inside of your wrist. Wait 15 minutes. Does your skin not react? Then you can safely use it on your face.

The clumping question: how do you mix bentonite properly?

Two common questions from reviews are: "it clumps" and "difficult to spread". This is normal; bentonite clumps more than other clays precisely because it absorbs water so strongly. Here is the solution:

  1. Start with the clay, not the water. First, put a teaspoon of clay powder in a small bowl.
  2. Add water drop by drop. Not all at once. Stir after every few drops. Bentonite needs time to absorb the water.
  3. Use lukewarm water. Warm water is absorbed faster than cold water, which reduces clumping.
  4. Let the mixture sit for 1-2 minutes after stirring. Bentonite swells and will naturally become smoother if allowed to rest.
  5. Use a wooden or plastic spoon. Metal can react with the minerals in the clay.

💡 Pro-tip: Mix bentonite with apple cider vinegar instead of water. The vinegar has a low pH that activates the clay better and results in a smoother paste. Use a 1:1 ratio (clay:vinegar).

Who is this clay mask for?

Bentonite clay is the ideal choice for:

  • Oily skin with excessive sebum production
  • Skin with stubborn impurities that do not disappear with milder clay types
  • Clogged pores and blackheads that need a deeper clean
  • Those who already have experience with clay masks and are looking for a more intensive variant

Not the right choice for: Sensitive or dry skin, choose White Kaolin. Normal skin wanting a milder cleanse, choose Green Clay or Red Clay.

Bentonite vs Green Clay — what is the difference?

Both are powerful cleansers for oily and impure skin. But they work differently:

🟫 Bentonite > Swells and penetrates deeper into the pores. Highest absorption capacity. For stubborn, deeper-seated impurities. Clumpier in texture, requires more careful mixing.

🟢 Green Clay > Absorbs sebum at the skin's surface. Tackles superficial impurities and blackheads. Smoother in texture, easier to apply.

💡 Rule of thumb: Start with green clay. If your skin reacts well but you notice that the impurities do not disappear completely, switch to bentonite for a deeper cleanse.

Instructions for use

  1. Mix a teaspoon of clay powder drop by drop with lukewarm water (or apple cider vinegar) to create a smooth paste. See mixing tips above.
  2. Apply a thin, even layer to your face. Avoid the eyes and lips.
  3. Let the mask work for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off before it dries completely.
  4. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
  5. Apply a hydrating day or night cream afterward. Your skin will now absorb the care better.

💡 Tip: Lightly scrub your skin before the mask. A reviewer confirms that this enhances the effect.

Frequently asked questions about this product
