Shampoo Bars and the Curly Girl Method: Everything You Need to Know

The Curly Girl (CG) method is a hair care routine for people with curly or wavy hair. The principle is simple: avoid ingredients that damage your curls (sulfates, silicones, parabens) and use products that nourish and define your curls. In this article, we explain how the CG method works, why Beesha shampoo bars are CG-proof, and how to follow the method step by step.

The three ingredients the CG method avoids

The CG method centers on eliminating three types of ingredients that damage curls:

Sulfates (SLS) are aggressive cleansing agents that strip natural oils from your hair and scalp. They leave your hair feeling dry, frizzy, and lifeless. Exactly the opposite of what curls need.

Silicones create an artificially smooth layer over your hair. It feels nice at first, but the layer blocks moisture absorption. Over time, your hair becomes drier and heavier. Silicones can only be removed with sulfates, trapping you in a vicious cycle.

Parabens are synthetic preservatives that the CG method prefers to avoid.

Why are Beesha shampoo bars CG-proof?

All Beesha shampoo bars and conditioner bars are free from sulfates, silicones, and parabens. That is no coincidence; it is the foundation of our formula. What we do use instead:

SLSa (Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate) instead of SLS. Despite the similar name, these are completely different ingredients. SLSa is a mild, plant-based surfactant derived from coconut. It cleanses effectively while respecting your hair and scalp's natural oils. Milder lather, just as clean.

Plant-based keratin and proteins that strengthen and repair the hair. Vitamin B5 that locks in moisture. Coconut oil and shea butter that nourish and hydrate. All CG-approved ingredients.

What is a β€œfinal wash” and do I need it?

If you currently use liquid shampoo with sulfates and silicones and want to switch to the CG method, you start with a final wash. This is a one-time wash using a shampoo that does contain sulfates. Why? Because the silicones that have built up in your hair can only be removed with sulfates.

After that single final wash, you begin using sulfate-free products and stop using silicones entirely. This is how you break the cycle.

Are you already using a sulfate-free shampoo without silicones? Then you do not need a final wash and can start immediately with Beesha shampoo bars.

The CG routine with Beesha β€” step by step

Step 1: Cleanse with a shampoo bar

Wet your hair, rub the shampoo bar between your hands or directly over your hair, massage the lather into your scalp, and rinse. Focus primarily on the scalp, not the lengths. The lengths will be cleaned by the water running through your hair.

Which shampoo bar? Choose based on what your hair needs:

Dry or brittle hair β†’ Hydration & Nutrition (Coconut, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine & Sandalwood, Mango, Wild Cherry, and Mystic Vanilla)

Fine hair that needs more volume β†’ Volume & Resilience (Blueberry, Frangipani, Cedar & Rosemary)

Hair that gets greasy quickly β†’ Fresh & Clean (Citrus & Spice, Fresh Cucumber, Eucalyptus)

Not sure? β†’ Lavender β€” the all-rounder that works for every hair type

Step 2: Condition with a conditioner bar

For curly hair, this is the most important step. A conditioner bar seals the hair cuticles, retains moisture, and defines your curls. Without conditioner, curls become frizzy, dry, and shapeless.

Rub the conditioner bar over your wet hair a few times. Focus on the lengths and ends, not the scalp. Leave it in for 1–2 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.

The conditioner bar does not lather. That is normal; it is not a shampoo.

Step 3: Style

After conditioning: gently squeeze excess water from your hair with a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt. Do not rub, as this disrupts the curl pattern. Apply a CG-approved styling product (gel, mousse, or cream) if desired and let your hair air dry.

Step 4: Intensive care (weekly)

Want to nourish your curls extra deeply? Use a hair mask once a week instead of the conditioner bar. The Hydrate & Repair Hair Mask with argan oil is particularly popular for curls. It deeply hydrates and reduces frizz.

The transition period: be patient

If you are switching to the CG method with shampoo bars for the first time, you will go through a transition period of 2 to 4 weeks. Your hair is adjusting to the absence of silicones and sulfates. During this period, your hair may feel drier, greasier, or coarser than you are used to. This is normal and will pass.

After the transition period, most customers notice their curls are more defined, less frizzy, and better hydrated. Give it time.

Not just for curls

A common misconception: our shampoo bars are not only for the CG method or for curly hair. The Curly Girl community is a large group of customers who appreciate our range, but all Beesha products are suitable for all hair types: straight, wavy, curly, fine, thick, or color-treated. CG compatibility is a bonus, not a limitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all Beesha products CG-proof?
Yes. All shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and hair masks are free from sulfates, silicones, and parabens.

Which conditioner bar is best for curls?
All conditioner bars share the same formula. Choose based on scent. Popular choices for curls: Coconut (top-rated, 9.7/10) and Ylang Ylang (most reviewed, 114 reviews).

Can I order a trial pack to try it out?
Yes. Our trial packs contain a mini shampoo bar and mini conditioner bar in the same scent, good for 10–15 washes. €6.95 per pack.

My curls have become flatter after the switch, what now?
This can happen during the transition period. Use a conditioner bar after every wash and limit the amount. Too much product can weigh curls down. After 2–4 weeks, you should see a difference.

Do I have to use a conditioner bar every time?
For curly hair: yes, preferably. Curls need more hydration than straight hair, and the conditioner bar is the step that locks in moisture and defines your curls.

Can I combine the CG method with a protein-free wash?
Yes. If your hair feels stiff or brittle (protein overload), you can use the 0% Shampoo Bar and 0% Conditioner Bar as a reset. Both are CG-proof and protein-free. Read more in our blog article about the 0% line.
