Shampoo bars and afro-textured hair (type 4c): is that a good match?

Do you ever hear that shampoo bars “don’t work” for Afro-textured hair? We hear that question regularly, too. And to be fair: Afro-textured hair, especially curl type 4c, has different needs than straight or slightly wavy hair. Yet, the question of whether a shampoo bar is suitable is more complex—and more positive—than you might think. In this blog, we explain what it comes down to, so you can make an informed choice yourself.

What makes Afro-textured hair (type 4c) so special?

Type 4c is the tightest curl pattern: the curls are tightly coiled and the hair is often dense and full. Beautiful, but also delicate. Because of that tight curl, the natural sebum from your scalp struggles to travel all the way to the lengths and ends. The result? Afro-textured hair is naturally drier and breaks more easily than other hair types.

This means that moisture and softness are the most important things for 4c hair. You notice anything that dries out or treats your hair harshly with this type extra quickly.

Are shampoo bars suitable for Afro-textured hair?

Here is the good news: many of the qualities that Afro-textured hair is looking for are already in our shampoo bars.

  • Sulfate-free. Our bars do not contain aggressive SLS, but the milder, plant-based SLSa derived from coconut. It cleanses more gently and dries your hair out less, which is exactly what dry hair needs.
  • Silicone-free. No layer that builds up and eventually makes your curls flat and lifeless.
  • Curly Girl-friendly. All our shampoo bars fit within the Curly Girl method, which many people with curls and Afro-textured hair follow.

However, we want to be honest: our formula was originally developed for European and Asian hair. We make no guarantees specifically for type 4c. From experience, we know that it works great for some and a bit less for others; it really varies from person to person and hair to hair. Often, the difference isn't in the soap itself, but in the way it's used. And there is a lot to gain there.

How to use a shampoo bar on Afro-textured hair

With these tips, you will get the most out of your bar:

  1. Do not rub the bar over your lengths. Pulling a bar directly through dense, curly hair causes tangles and breakage. Rather, lather the bar in your hands, or use it only on your scalp and gently squeeze the foam through your lengths afterwards.
  2. Always combine with a conditioner bar. Our conditioner bar with shea butter closes the hair cuticles and gives your hair the moisture boost it needs. For Afro-textured hair, this step is nearly indispensable.
  3. Add moisture after washing. A leave-in or a few drops of oil in wet hair will keep your curls supple and soft.
  4. Give your hair a transition period. Coming from products with silicones? Then count on a period of about 2 to 4 weeks for your hair to get used to the new, building care routine.

Moisture, moisture, and more moisture

If there is one thing we want to share, it is this: for 4c hair, everything revolves around retaining moisture. A shampoo bar cleanses your hair mildly, but it is the combination with a good conditioner and possibly a leave-in or oil that makes the difference between stiff and soft. Think of your haircare as a team sport, not as one single product that has to do everything.
