Wheat Protein in Shampoo Bars: Safe for Celiac Disease?

A frequently asked question from customers with celiac disease or gluten intolerance: do Beesha shampoo bars contain gluten, and is it safe to use them? The short answer: yes, for the vast majority, they are. In this article, we explain why.

What is hydrolyzed wheat protein?

Many of our shampoo bars and conditioner bars contain Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein. “Hydrolyzed” means that the wheat protein has been broken down into very small particles. These particles are so small that the body no longer recognizes them as gluten.

Our wheat protein contains less than 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten and therefore complies with EU Regulation 828/2014 for gluten-free products. By comparison, this is the same standard that applies to food products sold as “gluten-free.”

In addition, it is important to know that shampoo bars are a rinse-off product: you apply it and rinse it off immediately. The product is not ingested and does not remain on the skin for long periods.

What does wheat protein do for your hair?

Wheat protein is not a filler. It is an active ingredient that supports your hair in several ways. It strengthens the hair structure by filling in small gaps in the hair shaft, making the hair stronger and more resilient. It retains moisture in the hair, helping dry and brittle hair look healthier and shinier. It improves elasticity, making the hair less prone to breakage. And it helps protect against external influences such as heat, salt water, and the sun.

Wheat protein is therefore an ingredient that we have consciously included in most shampoo bars and conditioner bars.

Which products contain wheat protein and which do not?

Most Beesha shampoo bars and conditioner bars contain wheat protein. But not all of them. If you want to avoid wheat protein completely, you have two options:

Shampoo Bar 0%: Protein-free and fragrance-free. Contains no wheat protein and no other proteins. Developed as a reset bar for protein overload, but also suitable if you want to consciously avoid wheat protein.

Conditioner Bar 0%: Protein-free, fragrance-free, and CAPB-free. The protein-free conditioner.

What about other proteins in the range?

In addition to wheat protein, some of our products also contain rice protein (Hydrolyzed Rice Protein), corn protein, soy protein, or vegetable keratin (Hydrolyzed Keratin). They are relevant for another reason: the balance between protein and moisture in the hair. Read more about that in our blog post about the 0% line.

When in doubt: consult your doctor

Although hydrolyzed wheat protein complies with the EU standard for gluten-free products and is a rinse-off product, every body is different. Are you extremely sensitive to gluten or do you have concerns? Always consult your GP or specialist. They can assess whether the product is suitable for your situation.
